Some examples of general exercises one could do to strengthen their Rectus Femoris and their quadriceps without do too much strenuous physical activity would be swimming laps using flutter kick and a kick board to start slow. After getting used to this exercise try using fins. Your legs won't be used to fins so start easy. Then once your body is more comfortable to weight baring exercises you can start running, biking, climbing, skiing, and rollerblading.
